As of right now, most West Coast games are still going on.
– The red-hot Joey Votto of the Reds (redundancy department of redundancy!!!) took his first day off today. His replacement, Miguel Cairo, hit a home run. Miguel Cairo!
– Tampa’s Matt Garza has been very good against the Red Sox throughout his career, including ALCS MVP when the two teams played each other in 2008, and he’s having an excellent year, with a 2.70 ERA and strong peripherals. Tonight, he got utterly lit up by the Red Sox.
– The Yankees scored four total runs in two games… and won them both. The 40-year-old, recently injured Mariano Rivera got saves in both games, his first two-save day since 2007. Oh, and he looked better getting the second one than the first, where he walked someone (!!!).
– The power went out at Wrigley, delaying the game. Thanks for keeping us entertained, Cubs.
– Tonight, Ubaldo Jimenez entered the COL/ARI game with an impossibly tiny 0.99 ERA. All he did was throw eight more shutout innings.
– I’m watching that just-mentioned COL/ARI game and the Arizona bullpen, which has its ummmm issues, just got three outs on five pitches.
– The two pitching staffs tied for the fewest home runs surrendered, with 30? Detroit (understandable: good pitching staff, they play in Comerica) and the Rockies (WTF? Coors!).
– I am a whiny Yankee fan so I’ve been complaining about the Yankee lack of offense recently… until I checked out the Phillies’ current woes. In the past four games, they’ve been shut out three times, by Daisuke Matsuzaka, RA Dickey, and Hisanori Takahashi. Additionally, they were shut out by Tim Wakefield for eight innings, though they scored runs in the bottom of the ninth in that game. That inning was the only inning in which they’ve scored runs in four games.
– Last night, the Cardinals’ Adam Wainwright struck out twelve batters in seven innings and allowed only one run. He took the loss. Oh, and that one run? A Jerry Hairston Jr. home run.
– The Nationals just scored three runs against Tim Lincecum. ETA: After 4.2 innings, 6 runs, and 5 walks (!!!), Lincecum’s night is over.
