Troy Tulowitzki drove in seven of Colorado’s nine runs.
-It was the fifth 7-RBI game this year, way down from recent years (there were 13 such games last year, one of them by Tulowitzki).
San Diego scored 6+ runs for the third straight game–the first time that has happened since July 16th-18th.
The Yankees outhit Tampa 10-6 but lost 4-3.
-All four of Tampa’s runs came on a pair of 2-run homers from Dan Johnson.
–Three of Johnson’s last four home runs have given Tampa a one-run lead.
—He only has five home runs on the season.
Also in that game, Chad Qualls came in with a one run lead and hit Derek Jeter then gave up the lead on a home run to Granderson. He got the win.
Chris Sale gave up a run.
Roy Halladay only went six innings.
Trevor Cahill gave up six runs in five innings and lost.
-To the Royals.
–And Bruce Chen, who gave up three runs over five innings and got the win.
—Wilson Betemit hit a Grand Slam off Cahill
—-Betemit is now hitting .317/.399/.552/.951 with 12 home runs in just 263 plate appearances.
The Braves lost, clinching a series loss for them at home.
-They are now 7-8 against the Washington Nationals.
–It’s also the first time they lost a series at home since the end of April.
Jenrry Mejia left after 2.1 hitless innings with a shoulder injury (as if the Mets needed more bad news on the pitching front). His replacement, Raul Valdes, gave up 4 runs in 1.2 innings.
-Valdes got the win.
–That’s 97 losses now for the Pirates, who are determined to become the worst team since the 51-111 2004 Diamondbacks.
Carlos Marmol has now struck out 122 batters in 69.1 innings.
Jered Weaver went 7 innings of 1-hit shutout to improve to…12-11. I imagine he would be getting much more press about being a case study in how stupid the win stat is for pitchers if Felix Hernandez wasn’t doing an even better job of that.
-Cleveland sent just 28 men to the plate.
Brad Bergesen threw a CG 1-run game.
-The one run was a Jose Bautista home run, his 47th.

Oh, yes, another thing to be mentioned:
–The Marlins changed pitchers in order to face the opposing pitcher.
—Twice.
—-The second time it happened was with two outs. The reliever managed to retire the pitcher, but not before allowing another run to score on a wild pitch.
—–It was the only batter he would face.
strictly speaking Qualls didn’t actually hit Jeter…he hit the knob of the bat, so perhaps the win is poetic justice in a way.

–Justin Maxwell, he of the .206 career batting average and under 200 career at-bats (at the time, anyway; he’s now up to 201), hit his third career grand slam. George Brett, with over 3000 hits and over 300 home runs, had only two in his entire career.
—It was just his 9th career home run of any kind.
—-It was also just his fourth career at-bat with the bases loaded. Only one other player hit three grand slams in his first four at-bats with the bases loaded: Shane Spencer.
